Celebrating a Life of Purpose: Honoring Her Majesty Queen ’Masenate Mohato Seeiso at Maluti Adventist Hospital
On the morning of 23rd June 2026, Maluti Adventist Hospital stood in quiet pride and celebration as it honored a remarkable milestone; the birthday of Her Majesty Queen ’Masenate Mohato Seeiso. Although Her Majesty was born on 2nd June 1976, the significance of her life journey was deeply felt within the very walls of the hospital where she first drew breath. This commemoration was more than a tribute; it was a reflection on a legacy that continues to inspire compassion, dignity, and service across Lesotho.
Special thanks to UNICEF Lesotho, World Vision International Lesotho, and Shoeshoe Ea Moshoeshoe for joining hands to celebrate Her Majesty birthday with Maluti Adventist Hospital in a truly meaningful way. Born in this hospital five decades ago, Her Majesty chose to mark this milestone by giving back to the place where her story began. The celebration was therefore not only symbolic, but impactful, as it supported improvements to the maternity and children’s wards, helping to create a more dignified and comfortable environment for mothers, newborns, and young patients.
Queen ’Masenate Mohato Seeiso was born Anna Karabo Motšoeneng at Maluti Adventist Hospital in Mapoteng, in the Berea District. She is the eldest of five children born to Thekiso Motšoeneng and his wife ’Makarabo. Baptized Anna in the Roman Catholic Church, her early years were grounded in faith and strong family values. She later enrolled at Machabeng International College in Maseru in 1990, where she studied until 1996, completing both the International General Certificate for Secondary Education and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. During her time there, she actively participated in community service, supporting institutions such as the Angela School for the Disabled and the Centre for the Blind; early indications of her lifelong commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities. In 1997, she attended the National University of Lesotho, further shaping her path of leadership and service.
In support of the hospital initiative, UNICEF contributed essential items including bedside screens, receiving blankets, baby bibs, and additional blankets. These contributions play a vital role in safeguarding privacy, promoting dignity, and providing comfort and warmth for mothers and newborns. As UNICEF Lesotho National Champion, Her Majesty continues to use her voice to advocate for the wellbeing of women and children. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to survive, thrive, and reach their full potential.
Her Majesty’s journey into national prominence is complemented by her devoted family life. Queen ’Masenate and His Majesty King Letsie III are blessed with three children; Princess Senate, born on the 7th of October 2001, Princess ’Maseeiso, born on the 20th of November 2004, and Prince Lerotholi, born on the 18th of April 2007. As a mother and Queen, she balances her responsibilities with grace, embodying values of care, discipline, and dedication both at home and in her national role.
The celebration at Maluti Adventist Hospital brought together staff, patients, development partners, and the wider community in a spirit of gratitude and unity. It served as a reminder that extraordinary journeys often begin in humble places. The hospital community takes immense pride in its enduring connection to Her Majesty, recognizing her as a symbol of resilience, humility, and purpose rooted in their shared history.
Guiding the day’s reflections was a message drawn from Psalm 139:14: “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” This scripture resonated deeply with all present, affirming the intrinsic worth of every individual and celebrating the divine purpose evident in Her Majesty’s life. It highlighted not only her birth, but the meaningful journey she has made in service to others.
Queen ’Masenate Mohato Seeiso is deeply involved in a wide range of charitable initiatives and views her patronage roles as a call to meaningful action. She serves as Patron of organisations such as the Lesotho Red Cross Society, SOS Children’s Village, and Machabeng International College. She is particularly passionate about advocating for people living with disabilities, supporting initiatives that amplify their voices and improve their quality of life. Her work extends to impactful projects like the Hlokomela Banana initiative, which provides free sanitary towels to schoolgirls, as well as ongoing support for the Lesotho Girl Guides Association and other community-driven programmes aimed at empowering young people and vulnerable populations.
Her Majesty is also widely recognized for her passion for health and fitness. She regularly participates in demanding activities such as the 116-kilometre Moshoeshoe Walk and maintains a disciplined fitness routine. For Queen ’Masenate, physical activity goes beyond appearance; it is essential for mental wellness, spiritual clarity, and maintaining balance amid the demands of royal duty. She believes that strength of body supports strength of mind and spirit, enabling her to serve effectively and with purpose.
Faith remains the cornerstone of Her Majesty’s life. A devoted Catholic, she draws strength from scripture, prayer, and worship. Her public expression of faith, including her love for singing hymns, reflects a deep personal relationship with God. She believes that all she does is guided by divine purpose, and that true fulfillment comes from aligning with God’s will. This unwavering faith continues to shape her leadership, her service, and her compassionate engagement with Basotho.
The success of the celebration at Maluti Adventist Hospital lies not only in honoring a birthday, but in reaffirming a powerful narrative; one of humble beginnings, purposeful living, and selfless service. It underscores the hospital’s role as more than a place of healing; it is a custodian of life stories that have shaped the nation. As the day concluded, it left behind a renewed sense of pride, inspiration, and commitment to preserving the values that Her Majesty so beautifully represents, while also highlighting the importance of partnerships in advancing maternal and child health for future generations.
