Bringing Healthcare Closer to Every Mosotho Through Community Outreach

The Christian Health Association of Lesotho (CHAL), through its network of 8 hospitals and 71 health centres, continues to play a vital role in ensuring that quality healthcare reaches communities across Lesotho, particularly those living in hard-to-reach and remote areas.

Lesotho is mountainous landscape and harsh weather conditions often make travel to health facilities difficult. For many people, especially older persons, pregnant women, people living with chronic illnesses, and those with limited mobility, accessing healthcare can become a significant challenge. Long walking distances, poor road infrastructure, and seasonal weather conditions can delay or even prevent people from receiving essential health services.

To address these challenges, CHAL health facilities regularly conduct community outreach services, taking healthcare directly to the people who need it most. Rather than waiting for patients to travel long distances to health facilities, healthcare teams visit villages and communities, ensuring that no Mosotho is left behind.

These outreach programmes are much more than health education campaigns. They provide a broad range of essential health services, including immunisation, maternal and child health services, screening for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, routine health check-ups, treatment of common illnesses, mental health support, and referrals for specialised care when necessary. By delivering services within communities, CHAL facilities ensure that healthcare is provided in a way that respects people’s geographical, cultural, and social circumstances.

Community outreach is an important contribution towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which means that all people have access to the full range of quality health services they need, when and where they need them, without suffering financial hardship. UHC encompasses the entire continuum of healthcare, from health promotion and disease prevention to treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care throughout every stage of life.

Achieving Universal Health Coverage is one of the global targets adopted by all United Nations Member States through the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on UHC in 2019, countries reaffirmed that health is both a foundation for sustainable development and an important measure of social, economic, and environmental progress.

CHAL remains committed to supporting the Government of Lesotho and its health sector partners in advancing Universal Health Coverage. Through outreach services, the facilities continue to bridge the gap between health facilities and communities, ensuring that quality healthcare reaches even the most remote areas.

By bringing healthcare closer to where people live, CHAL facilities are improving access to essential services, promoting healthier communities, and contributing to a future where every Mosotho has the opportunity to live a healthier and more productive life.
