Job Summary
The Medical Superintendent serves as the senior medical leader, responsible for overseeing both clinical and non‑clinical operations. He/she ensures the delivery of high‑quality patient care, maintain regulatory compliance, and drive strategic planning and resource management.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership & Quality Assurance
- Oversee clinical services (inpatient, outpatient, surgery, and diagnostics).
- Ensure patient safety, infection control, medical audits, and clinical governance.
- Review morbidity/mortality outcomes and investigate incidents/complaints
- Refer complex cases appropriately and implement SOPs aligned with accreditation standards.
2. Operational & Administrative Management
- Manage daily hospital operations and ensure coordination across medical, nursing, and administrative teams
- Implement and monitor hospital policies, protocols, and SOPs
- Oversee medico-legal cases in collaboration with legal advisers
3. Strategic Planning & Financial Oversight
- Lead strategic planning and align operational objectives with hospital goals
- Develop budgets, monitor expenditures, and ensure cost-effective resource utilization
4. Human Resources & Staff Development
- Recruit, train, and supervise medical and non‑medical staff; conduct regular appraisals with the Human Resources Department
- Provide mentorship and training sessions
5. Regulatory Compliance & Governance
- Ensure adherence to health regulations, licensing, accreditation, and waste management protocols.
- Liaise with governmental authorities, health bodies, and accreditation agencies.
6. Stakeholder Relations & Reporting
- Act as the primary liaison between the hospital, health authorities, NGOs, donors, and the community.
- Prepare and present monthly or quarterly performance reports (e.g., KPIs, audits, financials)
7. Risk & Crisis Management
- Manage medico-legal issues, patient grievances, and clinical incidents.
- Lead crisis preparedness, response plans, and emergency drills
Qualifications & Experience
Education | MBChB or MD (essential); Master’s in Hospital Administration/Public Health (preferred) |
Clinical Experience | At least 5 years clinical practice; 2 years in hospital leadership |
Licensing | Must be registered with the Lesotho Medical, Dental and Pharmacy and Council |
Management Training | Courses in leadership, hospital management, or strategic planning |

Job Summary:
The Hospital Administrator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, strategic planning, and overall management of the hospital. This role ensures the efficient delivery of healthcare services, compliance with regulations, and the optimization of both patient care and hospital resources. The Hospital Administrator is expected to work closely with the Medical Superintendent and the Manager Hospital Nursing Services in ensuring that the Hospital provides the quality medical care and effective administration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Management:
- Oversee all hospital departments including medical, nursing, support, and administrative functions.
- Implement policies and procedures to improve operational efficiency and patient care.
- Coordinate with department heads to ensure effective and streamlined services.
- Financial Oversight:
- Develop and manage the hospital’s budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability.
- Monitor revenue cycles, billing, and reimbursements.
- Identify opportunities for financial improvement without compromising quality of care.
- Regulatory Compliance & Quality Control:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal healthcare regulations and safety standards.
- Oversee accreditation processes and quality improvement initiatives.
- Monitor and enhance patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes.
- Staff Management:
- Recruit, train, and manage hospital staff in collaboration with HR.
- Foster a positive and productive workplace culture.
- Address staffing issues and support professional development.
- Strategic Planning:
- Develop short- and long-term strategic goals aligned with the hospital’s mission.
- Analyse healthcare trends and adjust services accordingly.
- Establish partnerships and collaborations with healthcare providers and community organizations.
- Communication & Public Relations:
- Serve as the primary liaison between hospital staff, the board, government agencies, and the public.
- Manage crisis communication and represent the hospital at public events.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field (required)
- Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or Public Health (preferred)
- Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in hospital or healthcare management
- Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, medical terminology, and hospital operations
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in healthcare software and data analysis tools
WORKING CONDITIONS
Personal demands
The Administrator must maintain confidentiality, use sound judgment, be able to delegate and must be committed to the mission of the Hospital. Must also be able to balance emotions
Physical Demands
The Administrator may have to work odd or long hours at a time to complete special requests or projects. May have to spend long hours using office equipment, computers and attending sessions.
Environmental Conditions
Will have to serve a number of people and projects at one time, and will be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests. In such a way may find the environment to be busy and will need excellent organizational, time and stress management skills to complete the required tasks.
Sensory Demands
Sensory demands can include reading and use of the computer which may cause eyestrain and occasional headaches and the constant noise and activity of a busy office environment.
Mental Demands
Will have to manage a number of requests and tasks at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time.
